Commenting on a blog post

When the blog has comments switched on, you can read what other readers wrote under a post and add your own. This page covers reading, sending, replying, and what happens before a comment is shown.

Available on every plan

Anyone can comment when the blog has comments switched on. You do not need an account, and no plan changes anything here.

What happens to a comment you send

The blog's team reads every comment before it is shown. An approved comment appears under the post with the name you typed. A comment that is not approved never appears.

Diagram A comment is public only after the blog's team has approved it, and no message is sent to you either way. Come back to the post to see it.

Approval is done by people, so it takes time. No approval time is promised.

When a blog post has comments

A post has a comment section only when two things are true: the blog has comments switched on, and comments are on for that post. Otherwise the post's page shows no comment box, no comment and no comment count.

The blog's lists never show how many comments a post has. The count appears only on the post itself, once it has at least one comment. It sits under the title, as a link that takes you down to the comments.

Reading the comments under a blog post

The comment section sits near the end of a post. Its heading is Comments when there are none yet, with the line "Nobody has commented yet." Otherwise the heading counts them: "1 comment" or "N comments".

Comments are listed oldest first. Each one shows the name its writer typed, the date and the words. A reply sits indented under the comment it answers.

An answer written by the blog's team shows the blog's name and the tag Blog team, so you can tell it from a reader's comment. An email address is never shown with any comment.

Signed out — the comments under a post, with a reply started The names and words in the picture are examples. 1 The heading counts the post's comments. 2 An answer from the blog's team carries the tag Blog team. 3 Reply answers that comment. 4 The form's title says whose comment you are answering; Cancel reply under it turns the form back into a new comment. 5 The hint under Email address: your address is asked for and never shown on the page.

How to leave a comment on a blog post

The blog has no sign-in, so you type your name and email address with your comment.

  1. Open the post and scroll to Leave a comment, under the comments.
  2. Type the name you want shown in Name.
  3. Type your address in Email address. The hint under it reads "Never shown on the page."
  4. Write in Comment. Line breaks are kept. The box stops taking text when a comment is as long as it can be.
  5. If a security check appears in the row above the button, let it finish. The next section describes it.
  6. Press Post comment. The line beside the button reads "Sending", then turns green: "Thank you. Your comment will appear here once it has been approved."

After the green line, the Comment box empties. Your name and address stay filled in, in case you want to write a second comment.

Your comment is not public yet. Come back to the post later to see whether it is there.

The security check on the comment form

The first time you click into the form or type in it, a security check may start in a row above Post comment. Whether the check runs is the blog's choice, so you may not see it at all.

When it runs, the row reads "Checking your browser. Onflow Security is confirming you are a real person." It usually finishes by itself and reads "Browser verified. Protected by Onflow Security."

Sometimes the row asks for one action: "Confirm you are human: tick the box below." Tick the box that appears in the row, then press Post comment.

If the row shows an error, it tells you what to do and offers a Try again button. The messages and their fixes are under If something goes wrong and on Troubleshooting blog emails and comments.

How to reply to a comment

A reply is a comment placed under the comment it answers. It is read and approved in the same way before it is shown.

  1. Press Reply under the comment you want to answer. Replies have no Reply button of their own. The form moves under that comment. Its title becomes "Reply to name", with the line "You are answering a comment." and a Cancel reply button.
  2. Fill in Name, Email address and Comment.
  3. Press Post comment.

Press Cancel reply if you change your mind; the form goes back to Leave a comment.

Replies sit one level deep. To answer a reply, press Reply on the comment above it and name the person you are answering in your text.

What a blog comment can contain

A comment is plain text only:

  • No formatting, such as bold or headings.
  • No pictures or files.
  • A web address stays plain letters. It is never turned into a link.
  • Line breaks are kept, so you can write in paragraphs.

These rules are the same for comments and replies, so write yours to read well as plain text.

Your privacy when you comment on the blog

The note under Post comment states the rule: "Your comment appears here once it has been approved. Your email address is never shown. How we look after what you send is in the Privacy Policy."

The blog keeps these with a comment: the name you typed, your email address, the words and the date. The name, the words and the date are shown once the comment is approved. The email address is for the blog's team only.

Choose the name with that in mind: it is public. The Privacy Policy is the same one the form links to.

How to get a blog comment changed or removed

There is no edit or delete button for readers. Read your comment through before you press Post comment.

To have a comment of yours removed, open https://onflowads.com/support and send:

  • the address of the post,
  • the name shown on the comment,
  • its date,
  • its first few words.

The support link explains what that address opens. The blog's pages have no Help button, which is why you go to the main site.

If you delete an Onflow Ads account, the comments written with that account's email address are removed too, together with the replies under them.

If something goes wrong

These are the problems readers meet most often. Every other message of the comment form is on Troubleshooting blog emails and comments.

Your comment was accepted but never appears

  • Where you see it:

The green line "Thank you. Your comment will appear here once it has been approved." showed beside Post comment, and later the comment is still not under the post.

  • Plans affected:

Every plan, and readers without an account.

  • Why it happens:

The blog's team has not read it yet, or did not approve it. Nothing is public until it is approved, and no message tells you the outcome.

  • How to fix it:

Come back to the post later. Do not send the same words again.

There is no comment section under a post

  • Where you see it:

At the end of a post: no Comments heading, no form and no count under the title.

  • Plans affected:

Every plan, and readers without an account.

  • Why it happens:

Comments are switched off for the blog or for that post. Comments approved earlier are kept and return if comments are switched on again.

  • How to fix it:

There is nothing to fix on your side. To reach the team, open https://onflowads.com/support or press Contact in the blog's footer.

The Post comment button stays grey

  • Where you see it:

On the comment form; the button cannot be pressed.

  • Plans affected:

Every plan, and readers without an account.

  • Why it happens:

The page has not finished loading, or part of it was blocked in your browser. If scripts are off, the form also reads "Scripts are off in this browser, so a comment cannot be sent." Nothing was sent.

  • How to fix it:
    1. Copy your text if you have written any, then reload the page.
    2. Switch scripts on for the blog if they are off, pause any content blocker for it, and reload again.
    3. If the button is still grey, open the post in another browser.

"Comments are closed on this post."

  • Where you see it:

Beside Post comment, after you press it.

  • Plans affected:

Every plan, and readers without an account.

  • Why it happens:

Comments were switched off, or the post was taken down, after you opened the page. Your comment was not kept.

  • How to fix it:

Nothing can be sent on this post now. Copy your text if it matters to you. To reach the team, open https://onflowads.com/support or press Contact in the blog's footer.

"Too many attempts. Please try again in an hour."

  • Where you see it:

Beside Post comment, after you press it.

  • Plans affected:

Every plan, and readers without an account.

  • Why it happens:

Too many comments were sent in a short time. This comment was not kept; the ones you sent earlier were.

  • How to fix it:

Copy your text, wait as the message says, then send it once.

"The security check did not load. Check your connection. If you use a content blocker, pause it for this page."

  • Where you see it:

In the security check's row above Post comment, with a Try again button.

  • Plans affected:

Every plan, and readers without an account.

  • Why it happens:

The check could not be loaded: the connection dropped, or a content blocker or a network filter stopped it. Nothing was sent.

  • How to fix it:
    1. Check that you are online.
    2. Pause your content blocker for this page.
    3. Press Try again, wait for the row to finish, then press Post comment.

"Please complete the security check and try again."

  • Where you see it:

Beside Post comment, after you press it. The same place can instead read "The security check didn't pass. Please try again."

  • Plans affected:

Every plan, and readers without an account.

  • Why it happens:

The comment was sent before the security check had passed. It was not kept; your text is still in the box.

  • How to fix it:

Look at the check's row above the button. Wait for it to finish, tick its box if it asks, or press Try again if it shows an error. Then press Post comment.

"That comment is too long. Shorten it and send it again."

  • Where you see it:

Beside Post comment, after you press it.

  • Plans affected:

Every plan, and readers without an account.

  • Why it happens:

The comment is longer than the blog accepts. The box normally stops you before that, so this shows mainly after pasting a long text. Nothing was kept; a long comment is refused, not cut.

  • How to fix it:

Shorten the text, or split it into two comments, and press Post comment again.
